Lymphedema Therapy

Turn to UNC Health Caldwell when you need specialized treatment for lymphedema. Access services close to home in Lenoir, North Carolina.

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is swelling from too much fluid in your arms, legs, and, sometimes, other parts of the body. Certain surgeries, cancer treatments, and injury to your lymph nodes can cause lymphedema. Or you may be born with an abnormal lymphatic system that puts you at risk for developing lymphedema.

How Therapy Can Help

Trust our certified lymphedema therapist to provide excellent lymphedema therapy to ease your condition. You can’t repair lymph system damage, but you can manage your lymphedema symptoms.

At your first appointment, expect your therapist to assess your condition and therapy needs. You’ll also learn about self-care methods. Your therapy will take place at the UNC Health Caldwell Quest4Life Wellness Center.

Lymphedema Treatments & Therapies

Your specially trained physical therapist at UNC Health Caldwell may recommend one or more of the following treatments:

  • Aquatic therapy
  • Compression bandages, wraps, and sleeves – Put pressure on your arms or legs to help move fluid and keep it from building up
  • Manual lymphatic drainage – Uses hands-on therapy to gently massage your arms or legs to shift lymph fluid out
  • Exercise – Helps the lymph vessels move lymph out of your arms and legs to decrease swelling
  • Skin care – Prevents infection and minimizes skin cracking
