Spine Care

Beginning summer 2023, UNC Ortho will offer spine services. UNC Ortho is adding a fellowship-trained spine surgeon, Jose San Miguel, MD, supported by a highly-trained staff. Dr. San Miguel will offer minimally-invasive procedures performed with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. Each patient receives a personalized approach to treatment and because most pain in the spine requires no surgery, we employ a number of non-surgical treatments to help you recover. However, when surgery is needed, we provide accurate and convenient surgical services.

Nonsurgical Orthopedic Care

Rest assured, your orthopedist will start your care with nonsurgical treatments whenever possible. Depending on your condition, your care plan may include:

  • Behavioral or lifestyle change recommendations
  • Casts, braces or splints
  • Medications, including injections
  • Orthotics (support devices)
  • Physical therapy or other rehabilitation services
  • Rest

Quality Surgery Close to Home

Stay close to home while getting high-quality care before, during and after your surgery. If you don't get relief from nonsurgical treatments, you and your doctor may decide orthopedic surgery is your best treatment option. When possible, your orthopedic surgeon will perform your procedure using minimally invasive techniques. That means you'll have a smaller incision, less pain and a faster recovery than if you had traditional surgery.

Your procedure will take place at UNC Health Caldwell or if an appropriate candidate, at Prime Surgical Suites, LLC. Both advanced facilities makes the surgical experience as safe and convenient as possible for you and your family. Benefit from:

  • The latest operating room technology to help surgeons perform your procedure accurately and efficiently, so you get the best outcome
  • Nurses, your surgeon, and other caregivers closely monitoring you and remaining nearby at all times to respond to your needs
  • Amenities for loved ones, like Wi-Fi and phone charging stations

Joint Replacement Surgeries

If you have chronic joint pain from arthritis or have a joint deformity that interferes with your daily activities, you may be a candidate for joint replacement surgery. Joint replacements offered include:

  • Hip replacement surgery, including anterior hip surgery
    • When you choose UNC Ortho for hip replacement, you will recover sooner if your surgeon uses the anterior approach. This technique makes the incision in the front of your hip and affects fewer muscles. Hip replacement surgery has advanced with the direct anterior approach, which eliminates the need to detach tendons and allows for faster recovery times.
  • Knee replacement surgery
    • Robotic Assisted Knee Replacement Robot-assisted knee surgery is now available at UNC Health Caldwell, allowing for safer procedures with better outcomes and shorter hospital stays.
  • Ankle replacement surgery
  • Shoulder replacement surgery
