Lenoir – Caldwell Memorial Hospital announced today that its Vascular and Spine Center programs have earned a number of top regional, state and national recognitions. The awards, from CareChex® -- A Quality Rating Service of The Delta Group, are for clinical excellence and patient safety, and are based on cumulative performance across the most recent three (3) years of public data.
Caldwell Memorial earned top recognition as the #1 hospital in North Carolina and one of the Top 100 hospitals in the U.S. for vascular surgery. For interventional carotid care, Caldwell Memorial was among the Top 10% of North Carolina hospitals and among the Top 100 U.S. hospitals. Caldwell Memorial’s Spine Center program achieved #1 in the Hickory-Morganton-Lenoir region for Patient Safety in Spine Surgery.

Since its vascular program inception, Caldwell Memorial Hospital has been among the few hospitals in N.C. approved by CMS for reimbursement for carotid artery stenting. The procedure is performed at Caldwell Memorial by Endovascular Surgeon Dr. Peter Purcell. Additionally the hospital, its Center for Wound Treatment, Surgeons Dr. Peter Purcell and Dr. Donald Stewart, IV of Horizon Surgical Specialists, and Podiatrist Dr. Ross Jenkins of Horizon Foot & Ankle combine to make-up the hospital’s life-changing Limb Salvage Team.
Led by Caldwell Memorial Spine Center Program Medical Director and Orthopedic Spine Surgeon Dr. Matthew Hannibal of Carolina Orthopaedic Specialists, the Spine Center program at Caldwell Memorial is comprehensive. The program includes inpatient and outpatient physical therapy at Caldwell Memorial Rehabilitation Services; pain management through anesthesiology at Caldwell Memorial and The Pain Management Center; dedicated spine center operating room and operating room staff; and patient education at The Quest4Life Wellness Center on a variety of topics including back pain, spine surgery, smoking cessation, nutrition, and diabetes. Procedures performed by Dr. Hannibal as part of Caldwell Memorial’s Spine Center program include: Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) with Dr. Peter Purcell; Balloon Kyphoplasty; Lateral Interbody Fusion (LIF); Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion (LLIF); Lumbar Laminectomy; and X-STOP Spacer.
