Caldwell Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce an exciting technological advance that is available here for appropriate patients in need of spinal fusion. The MAS-TLIF (Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion) is a new system developed by NuVasive Spine for performing minimally-invasive spine fusions.
Dr. Matthew Hannibal, Medical Director of Caldwell Memorial Spine Center, is the first surgeon in the Western part of the State of North Carolina to use this advanced technology. The surgery is performed at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
The techniques for these fusions have been present for several years, but these cases are often challenging. With small incisions, there is a concern that delicate nerves may be injured by misplaced screws and that the bones of the spine cannot be manipulated as they can with a larger incision.
To address these concerns, the MAS-TLIF system manufactured by NuVasive Spine, allows Dr. Hannibal to use a combination of technologies that were previously not available for minimally-invasive surgery. The MAS-TLIF system incorporates advanced Nerve Avoidance Technology that helps him to avoid damaging any nerves during the procedure. The system also provides excellent visualization of the spine and the ability to compress and distract the bones of the spine, all through a 1 1/4 inch incision.
"I am happy to be able to bring the forefront of spine surgery technology to Caldwell Memorial Hospital and Caldwell County,” Dr. Hannibal said. “Less invasive procedures can mean less pain and less recovery compared to standard spine surgeries."
The availability of this technique allows more patients to be candidates for minimally-invasive surgery. And because there is less muscle disruption in a minimally-invasive procedure, there is generally less postsurgical pain and a faster recovery for the patient. Many are able to walk the evening after surgery and some are discharged home the following day.
MAS-TLIF is one of the many state-of-the-art surgical spine procedures available at Caldwell Memorial Spine Center including:
- Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF)
- Balloon Kyphoplasty
- Lateral Interbody Fusion (LIF)
- Lumbar Laminectomy
- Lumbar Discectomy
- Posterolateral Fusion
- X-STOP Spacer
