Quality information backed by top health care experts and federal government agencies
A new resource on hospital quality of care information is available to the public for the first time through a consumer-friendly website: www.HospitalCompare.hhs.gov. Hospital Compare will provide the public with useful and understandable information on hospital quality of care in an easily accessible way to assist patients, families and communities in making important health care decisions.
Hospital Compare is the result of the cooperation of the Hospital Quality Alliance, a public-private partnership of hospitals, government agencies, consumer groups and other health care organizations. These organizations have joined together to develop a shared national strategy for hospital quality measurement and are committed to advancing quality of care.
Approximately 4,200 hospitals—virtually all acute care hospitals— have voluntarily submitted quality information to share with the public. Initially, consumers will be able to research hospital quality information on seventeen measures for three common medical conditions — heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia — with new conditions and measures be added in the future. For example, the Web site will indicate how often a hospital caregiver provided a heart attack patient with an aspirin and explain why that is an essential step in the patient's care. Hospital Compare will continually evolve and be updated periodically to best meet patients' needs.
"Caldwell Memorial Hospital has been voluntarily submitting quality data related to heart attacks, heart failure, and pneumonia to a national data repository since 2002," said Laura Easton, CMH President and CEO. "The ultimate goal with Hospital Compare - as with other quality and safety issues that Caldwell Memorial Hospital has implemented including our own Safety Sam Campaign and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's 100,000 Lives Campaign - is to provide the best quality of care possible."
"Our patients' return to good health is most important to us and we are dedicated to the delivery of the most appropriate care for every patient who comes to Caldwell Memorial Hospital," Easton added. "That is why we are committed to providing the best in healthcare close to home."
Hospital Compare is one example of a source patients can use in helping to make healthcare decisions. Patients are encouraged to use the information to spur discussion of their care with physicians and other hospital caregivers. Patients should view Hospital Compare as one important source about a hospital, but not the only source.
