Orthopedic Spine Surgeon and Medical Director of Caldwell Memorial Spine Center, Matthew Hannibal, MD is the first in North Carolina to perform an innovative new procedure called Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion (LLIF) featuring Globus Medical's CALIBER®-L expandable device. The minimally-disruptive surgery takes place at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
Lateral access surgeries typically allow for less muscle disruption, less blood loss, and faster healing times in patients who are appropriate for this type of approach. While there are a number of devices that can be used in a lateral surgery, CALIBER®-L has a unique advantage. It expands after insertion between the vertebrae, allowing for an optimized fit of the device along with minimal impact to the spine.
LLIF is now among a number of other minimally-disruptive spinal procedures performed at Caldwell Memorial Hospital including Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF); Balloon Kyphoplasty; Lateral Interbody Fusion (LIF); Lumbar Laminectomy; and X-STOP Spacer.
A member of the Active Medical Staff at Caldwell Memorial Hospital, Dr. Matthew Hannibal is the orthopedic spine surgeon with Carolina Orthopaedic Specialists in Lenoir.
Carolina Orthopaedic Specialists is not a division of Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
